Belonging Without Barriers: A Voluntary-Contribution Synagogue Model

Kol Shira is built on the desire to make a vibrant Jewish congregation that is welcoming and accessible to all. That’s why we do not have a traditional dues model. Instead, we rely on members and participants to sustain our programs by voluntary donations. Donations of any amount are welcome, but they are not a condition of belonging.

Defining Our Congregation Membership 

Membership in Kol Shira is defined by a commitment to engage in, support, and contribute to the life of the community, and includes the opportunity to contribute to and vote in Kol Shira community decisions.

Kol Shira Member Statement of Commitment

Using the form below, I affirm that I support the purpose and values of Kol Shira—to build an inclusive, participatory community rooted in joy, song, connection, and spirit, offering opportunities for Jewish life and observance in the traditions of Reform Judaism—and that I meet the eligibility requirements of a voting member:

Membership is open to (i) a person who is Jewish by birth, either through matrilineal or patrilineal descent, or conversion; (ii) a person who is not Jewish but supports the Jewish beliefs, practices, and Jewish congregational involvement of their Jewish spouse, committed partner, children, or relative for whom they provide care due to disability or age; (iii) a person, regardless of faith, who was previously part of a Jewish member family unit and agrees to continue supporting Jewish beliefs and practices and the mission of Kol Shira. The children, under age 18, of any member shall be considered members without vote.

As part of my commitment to Kol Shira, I pledge to:

  • Participate in the life of the community. 

  • Contribute to the community with my time, energy, talents, and/or financial support.

  • Connect with and support the well-being of fellow community members.

  • Integrate my Jewish children, if any, into the life of the community.

By submitting the Statement of Commitment, I affirm my membership in Kol Shira, with the opportunity to contribute to and vote in community decisions.
